Breaking chip news

After wandering around Mevagissey unsuccesfully trying to find a restaurant that wasn’t full we plumped for takeway chips on the harbour again, this time from 2 different establishments.  Firstly Georgia with nuggets and chips from Central Cafe

So I didn’t try these chips myself but they got a “hmm yeah they’re OK” from daughter which is pretty much her highest category TBF with “these are rubbish” being the only other option.

Wife and I tried The Fish Grill which was a mobile place on the harbour. Good selection of options including grilled Mackeral but we plumped for the normal battered fish and chips.

Now as you can see the fish was again served on top of the fish but in this case it didn’t affect the cripiness of the chips, I’m assuming because the lid was left open.  Chips themselves were just of the frozed variety but were pretty good.

To diverge from the chips for a moment (contraversial I know) have to give a mention to the fish.  Some of the best battered fish I’ve had. Beer batter cooked really crisp and really fresh fish. Felt bloated and slighly sick at the end as couldn’t stop eating!

So all in all a success.  Bird wise not much else to report. A pied wagtail kept us company on the quayside along with the obligatory Herring Gulls.  I know they are billed a “nuisance” but I quite like them!

Mine, mine, mine!

The story so far in Mevagissey.

So 4 days in sunny cornwall so thought it worth (a first ever) update on the bird life and chip quality although so far there’s been lot’s more birds than chips.

So I’m not the bird expert of the (not so) dynamic duo that formed chips and birds however here’s my observations:

Oystercatcher – Seen just by the house on the sand with the tide out. No idea what it was, had to look it up! Here’s a pretty poor photo, best I could do from our house…

Black headed gulls and Great Blacked-Backed gulls, again in the bay

Swallows and babies…

Housemartins, Kestral, Wrens, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, noisy Skylarks.

Also got a good video of a young Robin…

So onto chips (oh chips luverly chips)

So only 2 chips this week (3 if you count home made wedges). First was in the pub opposite (The Rising Sun). Pretty basic pub grub to be honest, chips were just frozen variety but they were fine.  Hot and fairly crispy so all OK.

Second lot were from the fish and chip shop in Mevagissey and they were a little disapointing. Homemade as you’d expect but bit soggy. Flavour OK and I didn’t mind them to be fair but wife and child not impressed. Would have been interesting to see what they would have been like if they weren’t sitting under the fish. Maybe first big debate for chipsandbirds.  Should the chips be separate when served takeaway for fish and chips?

Another factor could be that I was the last person in the shop before they shut.  What sort of place closed at 8pm! Although that brings me back to The Rising Sun where we were told we had (exactly) 7 minutes to order food at 7:23.  Nothing like a bit of flexibility eh!

Anyway there we have it. 4 days in and a plethora of birds with a couple of portions of chips thrown in.  What more could you want!
